Tolimán Volcano is one of the more demanding hikes near Lake Atitlán, with views over the lake, its neighboring volcanoes, and the surrounding highlands from the summit.
This hike starts in Santiago Atitlán, not San Juan La Laguna, so plan for the boat crossing in advance. We can help you arrange the boat crossing from San Juan.
Choose Your Route, starting from Santiago Atitlan:
- Adventure Camping (2 Days/1 Night): our guide meets you at the dock in Santiago Atitlán, or at your hotel there. The climb to the summit takes about 5–6 hours; we recommend starting no later than 10 am. You camp on or near the summit, depending on the weather conditions, then wake for sunrise before descending and returning to Santiago Atitlán on day two.
- Summit Challenge Day Hike: Start in the pre-dawn hours from a hotel in Santiago Atitlán. After a 5-6 hour climb and time at the summit, descend for 3-4 hours, returning to Santiago Atitlán in the late afternoon.
Hike Details:
- Difficulty: Moderate to difficult (7/10) – a strenuous 8 km trail each way.
- Includes: Knowledgeable local guide and round-trip transportation from Santiago Atitlán.
- Duration: 5-6 hours ascent, 3-4 hours descent.
- Bring:
- Water (3 liters recommended) and snacks;
- Warm clothing (jacket, gloves, hat);
- A windbreaker or waterproof jacket;
- Headlamp;
- Hiking boots.
