Rostro Maya, also known as Indian Nose, is one of the most loved sunrise hikes around Lake Atitlán.
You start early, climb with a local guide, and arrive while the lake is still quiet. On clear mornings, you can see the volcanoes, the villages, and the first light over the water.

The View
From the summit, you can see much of the lake and the towns of San Juan, San Pablo, San Marcos, Panajachel, and Santa Clara. San Pedro, Atitlán, and Tolimán volcanoes are visible year-round, and on clear mornings, so are the three volcanoes near Antigua: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango.
Choose Your Rostro Maya Experience:
- Pre-Dawn Hike & Sunrise: Start at 3:00 am for a challenging 2-hour climb, timed to reach the summit for sunrise. Descend the same way, or walk down to Santa Clara and catch a bus back to San Juan.
- Sunrise by Public Bus or Shared Minibus: Depart at 3:45 am and take a bus to Santa Clara, then hike about 40 minutes to the summit for a stunning sunrise. Return the same way or walk back to San Juan.
- Sunrise or Daytime by Private Taxi: A round-trip taxi departs at 4:00 am. The hike to the summit takes about 40 minutes. Experience the sunrise before returning the same way. Price per person: Q250; minimum 2, maximum 4 people.
- Daytime Hike: For those who’d rather not start before dawn, this hike runs between 5:00 am and 10:00 am, with clear daytime views.
Hike Details:

- A dry shirt to change into after the climb;
