You can learn to weave and dye with natural materials, following techniques used by the women of San Juan La Laguna.
We offer a free, 20-minute tour of the cooperative for anyone who wants a short introduction. If you’d like a more hands-on experience, paid workshops are also available.
In the paid options, you’ll learn the process starting with spinning cotton, dyeing thread with natural products, and weaving on a backstrap loom, guided by a weaver throughout. The tour and workshop take place at a cooperative close to MayAchik.
We offer you the following options:
- Option 1: 1 hour – Q65 per person. Learn the basic weaving techniques from San Juan, using the weaver’s materials.
- Option 2: 2–3 hours – Q175 per person. Learn natural dyeing and backstrap weaving, using the weaver’s thread. The finished piece stays with the cooperative.
- Option 3: 4 hours – Q275 per person. Learn and practice the full process, and take home your own small scarf, about 8 inches wiede and up to 30 inches long, depending on your pace.
